Genesis 18:1-15 06/29/08
“The scene with which this chapter opens is one familiar to the observer of nomad life in the East. During the scorching heat and glaring light of noon, while the birds seek the densest foliage and the wild animals lie panting in the thicket and everything is still and silent as midnight, Abraham sits in his tent door under the spreading oak of Mamre. Listless, languid, and dreamy as he is, he is at once aroused into brightest wakefulness by the sudden apparition of three strangers.”
What a vivid description of the setting of Genesis chapter 18 from the Expositor’s Bible Commentary.

Genesis 17:15-22 06/22/08
God has a plan for your life. Ephesians says that believers have been, “Predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will.” We are predestined to live in heaven forever. We also know that everything that happens in this life is foreordained by God. The Shorter Catechism states that God, for His own glory, foreordains whatsoever comes to pass. That thought alone gives significance to your life as a Christian. But the truth is, our lives can often be rather mundane. Though we know what the Bible says, it can often seem that God does not have a glorious plan but a boring plan for our lives. We want our lives to make a difference for God and yet much of life involves doing such things as working, taking care of our families, and going through the routines of life. We need to be assured that God does have a plan for our lives – that our lives do have purpose and eternal significance. As we study this passage today, we will gain confidence in the purpose and plan of God for our lives.

Genesis 17:9-14 6/08/08
God was and is serious about His covenant with man. God has made a gracious covenant with us. He has fulfilled the Abrahamic covenant by sending His own Son to be a sacrificial lamb in order to bring us into fellowship with Himself. This covenant is all of grace. He initiated it, He fulfilled the terms, and He chooses whom He will apply it to. For us today, the covenant is this – “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved.” Receive Christ and receive the gift of eternal life. But that is not all. We, like Abraham, are also called to walk before God in a devoted life of faith and obedience. When we go our own way and take lightly God’s covenant we are breaking the 3rd Commandment; we are taking His name in vain.

El Shaddai
Genesis 17:1-8 06/01/08
Thirteen years had passed since God had spoken to Abraham. He had settled down with his family and Ishmael his son. But Ishmael was not the son of promise. Abraham was 99 years old. Sarah was 89 and still barren. Humanly speaking, things looked rather hopeless; even impossible. It seems to me that so often in Scripture we find God bringing His people up against impossible situations so that everyone can recognize the futility of human effort and then put their trust in God. God delights to humble us and show us our weakness that He might demonstrate His power and exalt the greatness of His name. That is exactly what we find in this chapter with Abraham and Sarah who are both well beyond the age for being able to have children. In situations like this it is as if God intentionally makes it extra challenging to our faith and extra difficult for Himself. But nothing is too hard for the Lord. He is the Almighty. He is El Shaddai.
