Key to a Great Nation

Genesis 18:16-22 07/06/08
Verse 18 declares that “Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation.” What is it that makes a nation great? In Genesis 12:2 God said to Abraham, “I will make you a great nation.” First and foremost it is God that makes a nation great. God exalts those nations He chooses and puts down others. Psalm 75:7 declares, “But God is the Judge: He puts down one, and exalts another.” God is sovereign over the nations. Isaiah 40:15 says, “Behold, the nations are as a drop in a bucket, and are counted as the small dust on the scales.” Abraham would become a great and mighty nation because God chose him and made it happen. Psalm 33:12 says, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people He has chosen as His own inheritance.”
We might be tempted to think that since God is sovereign over the nations, then it does not matter what man does. Of course that kind of reasoning is as faulty as it is common. When God exalts a nation and makes it great, He does so by certain ways and means. In verse 19 God reveals what kind of means He will use to make Abraham a great nation. The means by which He will bring about what He has promised is for Abraham to lead his children and his household in the way of the Lord. The means by which he would become a great nation was to be a great leader in his own home. It is the same way today – the way for a nation to become great is for the men of that nation to take up their God-given leadership role in the home. When men lead their families in the way of the Lord, then the nation will also go in the way of the Lord.
